In 1972, Dean Berry Jr., his late wife Sandy and their five children at the time moved from Arlington Heights, Illinois where Dean had completed a ten-year career with Bell & Howell. Dean started his sales career at the early age of twenty years old and was the youngest salesmen in the History of Bell and Howell. By Twenty Three, he was the Youngest Sales Manager in the Company leading the Chicago Branch of Bell & Howell to National Sales Records. His success as a Sales Manager opened opportunities for increased responsibility within Bell & Howell. Dean was promoted to Sales Training Manager, Manager Personnel Development, National Sales Manager and ultimately Director of Dealer Sales.
It was during those ten years that Dean established himself both personally and professionally. He and Sandy were married in 1958 and began a family that would grow to five boys and three girls. Dean's work ethic and commitment to exceeding the expectations of employers, employees, and customers not only accelerated his comprehension of the office automation industry but ultimately provided him with the confidence and know how to take advantage of opportunities when they arose. One such opportunity came about when Bell & Howell decided to expand its sales efforts nationally and pursue growth through a network of independent dealers. After considering several potential cities, Dean and Sandy agreed that Memphis possessed the greatest potential for their new business venture as well as a positive environment for raising a family. As a result, Memphis Communications Corporation was born.
Through Dean's experience he quickly learned that one person could not effectively cover the vast array of communications systems alone. It became apparent over the years that, for his vision of integrated multiple solutions from several manufacturers to come to pass, he would have to rely on Product Specialists and designated Service Professionals who would collaborate in their areas of expertise to create solutions of all shapes and sizes to meet his customer's unique needs. As Memphis Communications Corporation established itself as a trustworthy and skilled partner for businesses in the Mid South and Nationally, Dean began to selectively expand the realm of services provided utilizing experts in each field who could identify a customer's needs and accurately design and recommend a solution. Today, Memphis Communications Corporation represents over 140 different manufacturers in four distinct communication disciplines and is now celebrating another Anniversary since the founding in 1972.
Memphis Communications Corporation now employs over one hundred people, five of whom are Dean's sons. Shane, Scot, Shell, Sean and Shad have grown up in the business and have been trained in one of the four communication disciplines which include Vision and Security Management, Audio Visual Systems, Document Solutions and Mailing Solutions. The same work ethic and commitment to excellence that started Memphis Communications Corporation is alive and well, and is being instilled in the third generation who are already working in the business.
Memphis Communications Corporation exists to design and provide relevant and practical cost effective solutions accompanied by service and support that reminds our customers what it means to be valued. Although we are not perfect, we refuse to stop pursuing perfection. Memphis Communications Corporation is large enough to provide everything you would expect from the largest office equipment dealer in the Mid-South, and the Nation's Largest Total Communications Dealer, but small enough to remember how to care. We are grateful to the thousands of customers who allow us to serve them. God willing, MCC will continue to do so far into the future.
